The World Health Organization has issued its first-ever guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility. Approximately one in six people (186 million) in the world of reproductive age experience infertility at some point and it doesn’t matter whether they’re in high- or low-income countries or regions. The guidelines emphasize education around healthy lifestyles and sexually transmitted diseases; targeted tests for common biological causes; treatment options; and mental health support. “Infertility is a global health issue.” WHO says. “However, access to fertility care remains a challenge in most countries.” The guidelines are intended primarily for health care professionals and policymakers.
