Women now hold a third of all superintendent positions in the nation’s 500 largest school districts, though at the current pace of change gender parity won’t be reached until 2054. The 2025 update of the Superintendent Research Project from education consultancy ILO Group notes that half of all new superintendents appointed in the largest 100 school districts this year were women. The West and Midwest showed the most notable increases, while the South continues to lag. Turnover, however, remains high, with 23% of districts experiencing at least one leadership change the past year. Women occupy almost 90% of K-12 teaching positions.
