Women with endometriosis may face a significantly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, particularly if they’re perimenopausal or with a body mass index over 30. A new study published in Diabetologia analyzed data from nearly 2.94 million people in Utah, including almost 100,000 with endometriosis, over almost 11 years. Women diagnosed with endometriosis were 46% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The study, led by researchers at George Mason University’s College of Public Health, notes that menopausal women didn’t have the same risk. Endometriosis, a condition where tissue found only in the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation and scar tissue, affects an estimated 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide.
