Back in 1916, Alice Burke and Nell Richardson drove almost 11,000 miles on a cross-country trip in support of women’s voting rights. Today, a restored version of their Saxon roadster, the Golden Flyer II, is on a 25-state national tour to collect 1 million signatures to call attention to the Equal Rights Amendment, which was first introduced in 1923 and officially died in 1982, falling three states short of the needed 38th to enshrine it in the Constitution. The Golden Flyer II (you can follow its progress here) was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as of March 30. The trip is sponsored by nonprofit ERA NOW, which was founded to raise awareness of the continued fight to pass what would become the 28th amendment. The core of the amendment focuses on legal equality regardless of sex and ensures that it applies to both federal and state governments.
