Soccer’s governing body has adopted new regulations mandating that each participating team in all FIFA women’s competitions must have a female head or assistant coach. The FIFA Council calls the ruling “groundbreaking,” adding that it will “reshape the future of women’s football.” FIFA Chief Football Officer Jill Ellis said, “there are simply not enough women in coaching today. We must do more to accelerate change by creating clearer pathways, expanding opportunities and increasing the visibility for women on our sidelines.” The rule will debut at the FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Poland this September.
