Almost half of all AI startups in California have no women on their boards. Women comprise only 15% of the board members of private AI companies across the state, and more than 40% don’t have any women directors. “This lack of representation matters because the decisions made in boardrooms today will shape the policies, products, and cultural norms that will shape our world tomorrow,” says California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a co-founder of report author California Partners Project. The analysis notes that publicly traded companies typically have more gender-diverse boards but representation on average is still only 25%.
