More than 50 medical schools across the country are emphasizing more nutrition training, but some critics are skeptical. The JAMA Network notes the need for nutrition training, citing a recent survey where more than half of medical students said they hadn’t taken a formal nutrition education course. However, JAMA asks, “What will they teach?”, expressing concerns that Department of Health and Human Services directives are “misaligned with the priorities of medical education.” It’s estimated that more than 1 million people in the United States die of diet-related diseases annually.
