New Mexico will become the first state to offer free child care starting Nov. 1 regardless of family income. The plan amounts to an average annual family savings of $12,000 per child. “We are giving families financial relief, supporting our economy, and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow and thrive,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said, adding that the state is also taking action to expand child care options, including launching a campaign to recruit licensed and registered home care providers. The U.S. Department of Labor says annual child care costs range from $6,500 to $15,600, depending on the state.
