The San Francisco Symphony has just named its first-ever female music director. Elim Chan, 39, will become the 13th music director in the Symphony’s 115-year history when she takes the post in September for an initial six-year term. Chan was recently appointed artistic partner with the Vienna Symphony and has also served as principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The San Francisco Chronicle notes that Chan, who has been called a “sought-after” guest conductor, will become only the third woman to lead a top-level American orchestra.
