Women are the largest consumers of dietary supplements, but research increasingly shows that they can cause liver damage. While rare, Weill Cornell Medicine (and others) notes that the problem is growing both because more people are taking them and, most important, people are taking more of them. “Many herbal and dietary supplements make claims in the media or on the internet that appear to be backed by research,” said Dr. Robert Brown, the Vincent Astor Distinguished Professor of Medicine at W3eill Cornell Medical College. “But these claims are not fully scrutinized by the FDA or in the peer-reviewed literature.” Dr. Brown discourages the use of supplements, for the most part.
